Indian Canyons

We decided to forgo traditional church on Sunday and worshipped instead in nature's cathedral.  I knew I needed a break from the church hustle--you know--the dance that involves shimmying four kids into presentable outfits, shoveling a five-minute breakfast down the hatch, barking out orders like a drill sergeant while cursing under my breath on the way out the door, then racing to the side church door in hopes we make the last verse of the first...or second hymn.  I decided we (I?) needed a little soul-searching; the Indian Canyons were our church of choice.  We read a Psalm on the way and then partook in His glorious creation, amidst the towering palms and boulder-studded expanses.  We did this hike last year, so we knew what to expect, but the boys are so much bigger, stronger...more daring.  The text pictures from Matt had Grandma hyperventilating.  That's when you know it is a truly great hike--Must. Make. Grandparents. SWEAT!  Take a stroll through the pictures. They don't do the landscape justice.  Sometimes we all need a little nature therapy...the quiet waters of Psalm 23...to settle our frantic spirits.

Best. Climbing. Rock. EVER.
(James came home with holes in the bum of his pants, thanks to all the sliding.)

Plotting The Next Leap
Fire-Brushed Palms
(Recently we learned that in the incident of fire, it is better to let it rush through and scorch the outer bark, rather than douse it with water, lest the superheated water boil the heart of the palm, causing certain death.  Interesting palm fact #2:  Palm trees are not trees at all.  They are a part of the reed family.  If you have ever seen a cross section of the "trunk," you could see the fibrous inner layers.  Thank me for your Jeopardy win later...).
This one kind of melts my heart....such tired eyes, but such a joyful smile

We may be back to the church hustle this Sunday, but I will channel the peace of the valley, Lord willing.
